Garage door torsion springs are rated by cycle life, with 10,000 cycles (a cycle being one opening and one closing action) the industry standard minimum. It’s possible that a broken spring can go undetected for a period of time; however, it is usually accompanied by an extremely loud “pop” and the ensuing difficulty opening and closing the door. While most broken springs can be detected by visual inspection (looking at the spring(s) above the door while the door is closed), some doors have springs that are enclosed in a shaft, or tube.
